Treasure Hunt

After watching National Treasure 2 (which we both give 2 thumbs up), Matt and I decided that we wanted to go on a treasure hunt. So we did. Matt looked online at www.geocaching.com to find some hidden "treasure" around the valley and we used our GPS to find it. First mission, a tiny green scroll. This one was only .2 miles away from our home. We drove and determined it was near the dumpster by an apartment complex. We parked but we a little embarrassed to go search the dumpster because members of our ward were walking around. We overcame our pride and found the scroll in a wood something. We added our name to the scroll. At that point, we realized how nerdy this really was, but we didn't care. We wanted more. Mission 2 was to find a pot somewhere in sandy. When we got close, we realized it was somewhere off the Jordan Parkway Trail. I spotted it in the willows with my owl-like eyesight. The rule is to leave an object in the cache and take one for the next cache (treasure) you find. I got away with a GI Joe and we left an egg of silly putty.

The dumpster in our ward boundries (the treasure is the the wood fence thingy behind it)

The scroll is barely visible in this shot. It is in the top left corner of the hole in the wood.

This shot shows (1) GPS (2) Scroll (3) opened keychain tube that held the scroll

Can you see the pot hidden in the picture? I could.

Winter Wonderland

Matt and I usually dread the cold winter weather, but this year we've decided to make the best of it and get into a new sport: Snowboarding. We got each other snowboards for Christmas this year and put them to good use (even before we actually "opened" them on Christmas morning).

Last week Matt went snowboarding with his friend, Mike. He was waiting outside while Mike was inside using the restroom. Matt was keeping an eye on his board while he was waiting, but I guess he starting looking elsewhere for just a second and that's when the thief made his move. Yeah, that's right. Somebody stole Matt's board right in front of him! When he realized it was gone, he looked around but didn't see it anywhere. Matt was secretly hoping he would see the thief riding it so that he could push him over and beat him up. Think about it. If he is locked into his bindings, he would have no way of defending himself. He'd be like the little brother on "A Christmas Story" that falls down in the snow and can't get up. Anyway, that pretty much ruined his day. But we recently found out that his credit card insures stolen items and so we get a new board at no cost. But, if you see anyone with a Salomon Surface 160 with white Rome Arsenal Bindings let us know...or call the police.

Today we got back from the 3rd annual backpacking trip to the Budd Family Cabin. The first time I joined Matt's Family on this trip was before we were even dating. In fact, that trip was a defining moment in our relationship. The the next day we decided to hang out on New Year's Eve. By "hang out" I really mean "make out." So that was the beginning of our relationship. 5 months later were engaged and 3 months later we were married.

Backpacking Timp

Our first camp below Emerald Lake

Earlier this fall, Matt & Ashley continued their grand life of adventure in the mountain tops of the Wasatch range. Along with their travel companions, Mike & Rochelle, they headed up the Aspen grove trail head, up a cliff side, up another cliff side, and yet another cliff side to reach (what a surprise) an additional cliff side. It never ended. This mysterious phenomena is explained by fact that we were backpacking up the cliff side, which for some unexplained reason, always makes the mountain look taller.

Just when we thought we couldn't handle anymore, the weather, of course, turned on us and it started to rain. As we *exaggerated for effect* trudged through knee deep mud carrying our 5 ton packs, we collapsed on the dangerously slim trail. *exaggerated for effect* We thought to ourselves, "I don't think we can make it back down alive," while we were being crushed under the weight of our own packs. *exaggerated for effect* At that point Rochelle looked up and saw something that gave her a glimmer of hope. "look!" So we looked. And behold, we beheld a gift from above. A rainbow. Suddenly our burdens seemed lightened and our strength returned. Of course Ashley explained away this miracle with her so-called Science. "Really a rainbow is just caused by Hydrogen Fusion in the Sun's core that gives off energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation that travels to earth at the speed of light, but still takes 8 minutes to reach the atmosphere which is filled with small water droplets from the recent rainstorm that act like prisms to refract the EM radiation into its different wavelengths causing a bow of color within the visible spectrum." *NOT exaggerated for effect* Then they threw her off the mountain.

After campin' on the mountain for two days, we were adopted by a large family of goats. They welcomed us to their flock by offering sticks to chew on and rock climbing lessons. Ashley was all for the climbing lessons and Matt was excited about chewing sticks. All and all, we learned much from these gentle animals.
